School of Law Student Elected UNSA President

A third year School of Law student, Anne Mwangi Mvurya has been elected as UNSA president.

This is the first time in history for a female student to be elected as president of UNSA formerly SONU.

Anne together with the other six members of the Council were sworn in on April 7, 2019 in Taifa Hall, Main Campus.

University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi congratulated the new student leader and her entire student council.

"I am happy to be part of the new transformation that is taking place at the University. It is the first time in the history of the University of Nairobi to have a female student Chair,” he said. He took the opportunity to thank the Independent Electoral Commission for the wonderful work in conducting the elections. “I have endeavored to infuse peace and fairness. I am happy to be given a team that has been democratically elected through a fair electoral process supervised by Independent Electoral Commission. This is the greatest moment of this university. I wish you well. May the good Lord bless you and guide you as you take the mantle of leadership,” he said.

Prof. Mbithi took the opportunity to thank the outgoing Chairman of UNSA, Mr. Antony Manyara. He was the first and indeed the inaugural Chairman of UNSA after the original student body was reconstituted to UNSA.

Team Twaweza emerged vcitotious in the concluded UNSA Elections.


The students’ elections were free, fair, transparent and credible. This was revealed by the Chair of the Independent Electoral Commision, Prof. Mohamud Jama, who is also the Deputy Principal, College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Prof. Jama observed that as a Commission, they had pledged to conduct a free and fair elections. “We pledged to adhere to all the procedures that govern elections. University Act 2012 amended, UNSA 2017 Constitution, Kenya Constitution 2010 and all other relevant processes. We believe we conducted a free, fair and credible elections”, he said.

After 22 intense days of electioneering, 13 teams applied to participate in the students council elections, but only three managed to meet the required threshold, 3 teams were cleared.  

Congratulations to Anne Mwangi, Chair, University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) Council. Anne is a Law student from Parklands Campus.
