UoN Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi Visits the College of Humanities

The University of Nairobi Chancellor Dr. Vijoo Rattansi had a two days tour of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th August 2014.

 

The Chancellor was accompanied by the University Chairman of the Council, the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Students’ Affairs, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Production and Extension and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Finance and Administration, Principals of other University of Nairobi Colleges together with the College Management Board of College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

 

On the Monday 4th of August 2014 the Chancellor visited Parklands Campus which houses School of Law and Center for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (CASELAP).  The tour started at 8.00am with signing of the visitors book at the Dean, School of Law’s office before touring the Campus and tree planting in the compound and ending with a meeting at the Prof. Okoth Ogendo memorial Boardroom.

 

On Tuesday 5th of August 5, 2014, the Chancellor had a tour of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (Main Campus facilities) and was welcomed by the College Management Board together with the Heads of Department.  The Chancellor visited the Faculty of Arts, School of Economics, School of Journalism (Printing Unit), the French Sub-department Computer Lab, the Confucius Institute and finally the Chancellor had Lunch with the members of staff at ED 213.

On this tour the Chancellor was accompanied by the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Students’ Affairs and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Production and Extension, Principals of other University of Nairobi Colleges together with the College Management Board of College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

 

During this occasion, Prof. Irungu challenged the college to find innovative ways of teaching so as to release the staff to do research.

Prof. Magoha indicated that the college has significantly improved in the last 5 years for example the Faculty of Arts produced 11 PhD finalists in the last graduation. He also challenged the senior professors to mentor the upcoming staff. In addition, he indicated that we need to rethink about research more and compete for funding by working together in synergy. He decried the level of our research output which is currently at a paltry 15% while we should be producing at least 30%.

 

The chancellor thanked the staff of the college for the splendid work and effort they do and encouraged them to even put more effort. She said that we should aspire to be top ten in the world ranking of Universities.
